Absolwent paryskiego uniwersytetu La Sorbonne, gdzie studiował muzykologię, uzyskawszy tytuł magistra, stopień nauczyciela mianowanego (Agrégation), stopień doktora nauk humanistycznych. Jako instrumentalista grywał na flecie poprzecznym, szczególne zainteresowanie wykazując instrumentami ludowymi, w tym dudami (temat pracy magisterskiej – musette). Zdołał odtworzyć musette i wprowadzić do życia koncertowego. Tematem jego rozprawy doktorskiej była francuska muzyka pastoralna na instrumenty dęte. Obecnie jest wykładowcą muzykologii i etnomuzykologii na Uniwersytecie „Le Mirail” 2 w Tuluzie oraz uczy gry na musette w Zakładzie Muzyki Dawnej Konserwatorium w Tuluzie. Współpracuje z wieloma znanymi zespołami, regularnie koncertując w Europie, Ameryce i Azji. Jego badania koncentrują się na francuskiej muzyce barokowej. Na polecenie Ministra Kultury inwentaryzuje spuściznę muzyczną w zbiorach muzealnych i bibliotecznych na terenie południowo-zachodniej Francji (publikacje kilku katalogów).

Jean-Christophe Maillard studied musicology at the Sorbonne (Master, Agrégation, Ph.D.) while undertaking several instrumentalist activities on the transverse flute. Evincing interest in folk instruments, especially bagpipes, he wrote his master’s dissertation on the musette. Assisted by folk and baroque instrument makers, he began to reconstitute and play the musette. He obtained the doctor’s degree in musicology, having submitted his dissertation on pastoral French baroque music for woodwind instruments. He teaches musicology and ethnomusicology at the University of Toulouse 2 – Le Mirail, and the musette at the Early Music Department of Toulouse Conservatory. He regularly appears in concerts in Europe, America and Asia with various and famous ensembles. His research focuses on regional French baroque music. Appointed by the French Ministry of Culture, he took charge of drawing up an inventory of the musical patrimony of public collections (libraries, museums) in the south-west of France and has so far published several catalogues.
